IMF to Launch New Book: Energy Subsidy Reform: Lessons and Implications

A seminar will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2013, and the World Resources Institute to mark the launch of the newly published book, Energy Subsidy Reform: Lessons and Implications.

This book, published by the International Monetary Fund, speaks to the array of economic consequences resulting from energy subsidies.  The editors of this text utilize extensive analyses and case studies to argue that subsidies indirectly encourage excessive energy consumption; reduce incentives in renewable energy investment; and promote inequity by only benefiting high-income households.

Speakers at the seminar will include

  • Carlo Cottarelli, Fiscal Affairs Department Director, IMF
  • Andrew Steer, President, World Resources Institute
  • David Lipton, First Deputy Managing Director, IMF
  • Nancy Birdsall, President, Center for Global Development
  • William Gale, Co-Director, Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, Brookings Institute
